Questions and Answers
What is different about the 9:00 service?
A: First of all, it is located in the Fellowship Hall! We have coffee, juice, and light breakfast options and participants will sit at the round tables. There are more opportunities to talk with people at your table throughout the service and hear from everyone in the room. Instead of a sermon, there is a short “spark” to help get the conversation going, which is related to the sermon that takes place at 10:45. The 10:45 service will remain very much the same as it has been, for people who prefer the traditional “feel” of Sunday morning.
Why did we make this change?
A: Given the rapidly changing demographics in our society regarding religion and the rise of people who identify as “spiritual but not religious,” we are experimenting with a style that might be more welcoming to folks who are put off by the idea of “church” even if they agree with our values. Also, we have discovered that some of our people prefer a service style with more opportunities for connection with those within our community, and this Sunday Coffee house format provides even more opportunity for connection and conversation than a traditional service.
What about Zoom? Can I participate from afar?
A: The coffeehouse is in-person only. Given our limitations in technology in the Fellowship Hall as well as the desire for this to be an interactive and intimate space, Zoom is only offered at the 10:45 service.
Can my kids come? Do they have to?
A: Our hope is that this will be a chance for increased engagement for all ages, but it is not tailored specifically for families. Children are welcome to come, and there are coloring pages and fidgets available for them at the tables. If you are an adult who does not have kids (at all, or if yours are grown up), we encourage you to invite young people to join you, to help relieve the Sunday morning pressure for parents and guardians. Kids behave much better with people they don’t live with! There is a one-room-schoolhouse childcare option for kids 4-10 who really don’t want to participate in the Coffeehouse. Nursery for ages 6 months to 4 years will remain available as well.
